The questioner: He says: His EminenceThe Shaykh- May Allah reward you - The scholars have mentioned the descriptions of the victorious group in the hadiths concerning this matter, and they mentioned the statement of Imam Ahmad: "If they are not the people of hadith, then I do not know them." The question: He said: What is meant by the people of hadith?

The Shaykh: They are those who follow the methodology of the Salaf, as we always and forever repeat. The term "people of hadith" does not refer to one or two or three individuals, but rather to everyone who has a special concern for narrating the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and believing in everything he brought (peace and blessings be upon him), without - as we mentioned earlier - without figurative interpretation or denial of the divine attributes, and without prioritizing opinion over the hadith. If the hadith is about the attributes, then without figurative interpretation or denial of the divine attributes; and if the hadith is about rulings, they would hasten to act upon it without prioritizing opinion. This is indicated by the authentic hadith narrated by the compilers of the Sunan from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "If religion were by opinion, then wiping the bottom of the leather socks would be more appropriate than wiping the top. He said: But I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks."
So he submitted to what he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing, which is wiping over the leather socks. As for opinion, it says: Wiping the bottom is the logical thing, because dirt and dust and ... adhere to the bottom of the leather socks more than to the top; so why do we wipe the top and not the bottom? "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing it." Similarly, it is narrated from Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "If religion were by opinion, I would say that the full ritual bath is obligatory for urination and the ablution for prayer is obligatory only for semen." But the command came for the full ritual bath for semen and the ablution for prayer for urination; so we stopped at the explicit text. This is the religion that every Muslim must be upon this foundation, on this scale of following.
The people of hadith were known for following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and what came from him, whether it agreed with opinion or contradicted it. Therefore, Imam Ahmad made his previous statement, which is that his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
A group of people from my Umma will always remain triumphant on the right path and continue to be triumphant (against their opponents). He who deserts them shall not be able to do them any harm. They will remain in this position until Allah's Command is executed ما تزال طائفة من أمتي ظاهرين على الحقِّ لا يضرُّهم من خالَفَهم حتى يأتي أمر الله
Sahih Muslim 1920
They are the people of hadith because they are the people who know best, first of all, what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon, and because they do not prioritize opinion over the hadith, nor the destruction of a country, nor anything similar to that; such as juristic preference and some principles adopted by those other than the people of hadith, such as juristic preference and ... and the like.
Yes.
