Given the multitude of parties and groups, is it permissible to take the positives of each group without joining them? And what is the role of scholars in unifying the Muslim front?

The questioner : The questioner asks, and you may see what we see regarding the state of Muslims today and the existing sects, such as the Salafis, the Sufis, the Tabligh, and others... these sects. But he says, I want to be like a bee that takes the sweetness from all these groups without joining them. What is your opinion on this? And what is your role in unifying the front of Muslims, especially since the enemies of Islam are united?

The Shaykh : As for our role in unifying the Muslims, this is an obligatory matter. But the problem that many Muslims overlook, or rather are ignorant of, especially the young people who are zealous for Islam but are confused, is that they ask: What is the path to unification? Or we say, unifying the Muslims is something to which one must strive, but on what basis is this unification to be? Is it on the basis of keeping everything old as it is, as is said? Or is it on the basis of the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
[An-Nisa 4:59]
? Whoever calls people, or calls Muslims, to unite and to have one word on a methodology other than this Qur'anic methodology, first, he contradicts the Qur'an, and second, he will not reach his goal, even if he lived the life of Noah (peace be upon him). That is because the matter is as it was said:
"You hope for salvation but do not follow its paths *** For the ship does not run on the dry land"
You want to unify the Muslims, and among the Muslims today there is one who disbelieves in your Book by saying that this noble Qur'an has a deficiency of about three-quarters or four-fifths. This is a Muslim, and perhaps he prays, fasts, and pays zakah. So how do you unite with him when he contradicts you in the essence of the creed in the Book of your Lord and claims that a deficiency occurred in it? The examples are many and very many. Therefore, everyone who wants, or is keen on, unifying the Muslims must remember that this unification must be based on and linked to the criterion of
And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger
[An-Nisa 4:59]
. This is first. And second, this confusion that the questioner referred to, where he is pulled in different directions, saying there are many sects and parties. The answer to this is in the hadith of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which is authentic from him, in which he said:
I have not left anything that brings you closer to Allah except that I have commanded you with it, and I have not left anything that distances you from Allah and brings you closer to the Fire except that I have forbidden it.
The answer to this question is in the hadith of the sects, in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Jews split into seventy-one sects, and the Christians split into seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Fire except one.
They said:
Who are they for, O Messenger of Allah?" He said من هي يا رسول الله قال الجماعة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1984Hasan (Darussalam)
In the other narration:
What I am upon and my Companions.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2641Da'if (Darussalam)
So you are a confused man, pulled in different directions by sects and parties. Know that the path to salvation is to be upon what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his noble Companions were upon, especially the Rightly Guided Caliphs. Then the confusion will be removed from you, and you will walk together on a straight path. Today we live with old ideas and differences, and they alone are enough to cause us confusion and division. What about the fact that differences have increased in the present age with many and very many matters, some methodological and some related to branches of jurisprudence? So salvation is returning to what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon. And therefore, we affirm this and assert that there is no way to the unity of the Muslims except if they unify their methodology. And their methodology, praise be to Allah, is: Allah said, the Messenger of Allah said, and the matter is finished. Whoever wants salvation will follow the path that leads to it, as we mentioned earlier.
