A discussion on the ranks of authentic hadiths between what al-Nawawi mentioned and what al-Suyuti mentioned - may Allah have mercy on both of them - .

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: Here - O Shaykh - al-Nawawi - may Allah have mercy on him - says regarding the ranks of authentic hadiths: "The highest is what al-Bukhari and Muslim agreed upon, then what al-Bukhari mentioned and then Muslim, then what is according to their conditions, then what is according to al-Bukhari's condition, then Muslim, then authentic from others." Here al-Suyuti - may Allah have mercy on him - says in "al-Tadrib": "Two notes: The first: I present divisions for this, one of which is mass-transmitted (mutawatir)." Then he said: "The second: The famous (mashhur). Shaykh al-Islam said: It is certainly transmitted, and I am hesitant about its rank, whether it is before what is agreed upon or after it." So, is this second division, the famous, a division that is attended to, or is it a discarded division?

The Shaykh: It is so, in your opinion, if we recall a scientific fact; which is that the Ummah accepted what is in "the two Sahihs" with acceptance, so that yielded knowledge, as Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah - may Allah have mercy on him - said, except for what was criticized among their hadiths. In this category, the famous hadith may be stronger than it. As for the first category - which is the majority; i.e., what al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated and the Ummah accepted with acceptance - it is stronger than the famous hadith. This is my answer.

The questioner: There is a questioner asking, O Shaykh, on a paper: Is combining prayers in the city like combining them in travel? In the sense that it is not.

The Shaykh: Excuse me here, what do you think of this entire division before we move to a jurisprudential issue?

Another questioner : The first question.

The Shaykh : Yes?

Another questioner: Do you mean the first question?

The Shaykh: What he read... .

The questioner: In general, it is said this is in general.

The Shaykh: And in detail?

The questioner: In detail, hadiths... a specific incident, it may be prioritized in one of "the two Sahihs," or in a hadith other than "the two Sahihs," over a hadith of Muslim, for example.

The Shaykh: And why did you specify Muslim over "Sahih al-Bukhari"?

The questioner: I am saying for example.

The Shaykh: No, a person starts with the higher and then descends, because if the higher is mentioned, what is below it is included a fortiori.

The questioner: Al-Bukhari, yes.

The Shaykh: Al-Bukhari, well, this is what students of knowledge must know: that this order is not scientifically established, yes.
Please, read the question.
