What is a hasan li-ghayrihi hadith? And what is the evidence for accepting it?

The questioner: His EminenceThe Shaykh : What is a hasan li-ghayrihi hadith? What is the evidence for accepting it?

The Shaykh : A hasan li-ghayrihi hadith is a weak hadith that has come through many chains. These chains are not free from weakness, but the weakness in their individual components is not severe. The basis for relying on a hasan li-ghayrihi hadith is the same as the basis for relying on a hasan li-dhatihi hadith. The key to trusting a hadith narration lies in what is known about the narrator’s condition. If the narrator is trustworthy, precise, and a good memorizer, the soul naturally feels more reassurance in his narration than in that of someone known for some degree of poor memorization. This rank descends from sahih to hasan because the trustworthiness has weakened somewhat. We know from experience and our practical lives that one of us trusts the words of some of his companions or friends more than others, but this degree of trust does not often reach the point of rejecting the narration of the person he trusts less, in favor of the one he trusts more. The same applies to the hasan li-ghayrihi hadith when the chains multiply and converge on a single subject, even if there is a narrator in each chain who is criticized regarding his precision and memorization. However, this collection instills conviction in the soul, because it is highly unlikely that they all made a mistake in narrating what they agreed upon. This is why reliance is placed on the narration of the hasan li-ghayrihi hadith. It is a matter concerning psychological reassurance, which hadith scholars express sometimes as hasan li-dhatihi and sometimes as hasan li-ghayrihi.
This is what comes to my mind as an answer to this question.
