I would like clarification of a phrase by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. He said, may Allah have mercy on him, after defining the prescribed asceticism:

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.

The questioner : How are you, our Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, I am well.

The questioner : How is your health? Is it good?

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah.

The Shaykh : You are welcome.

The questioner : I have a question here, our Shaykh. In a statement mentioned by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in "al-Tuhfah al-'Iraqiyyah," after defining the prescribed asceticism, he says: "It is leaving the desire for what does not benefit in the Hereafter, namely the excess of permissible things that are not used to assist in the obedience of Allah." Then he goes on to say: "Just as occupying oneself with the excess of permissible things is the opposite of prescribed asceticism, so if one occupies himself with them to the neglect of an obligatory act or by committing a forbidden act, he is a sinner."

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : This last phrase: "or by committing a forbidden act, he is a sinner."

The Shaykh : What is the difficulty for you? The statement is straightforward.

The questioner : He says: "If one occupies himself with them to the neglect of an obligatory act."

The Shaykh : That means he turned away and enjoyed what is permissible.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : He turned away from performing what is obligatory, so he has fallen into the forbidden. This is very clear.

The questioner : Fine, this is clear. And the second point, he says: "If one occupies himself with them to the neglect of an obligatory act or by committing a forbidden act, he is a sinner."

The Shaykh : That means it led him to commit a forbidden act.

The questioner : It led him to commit a forbidden act.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : And may He reward you.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
