The Shaykh : Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) opens a chapter explaining what a close friend of Allah does when his tongue overcomes him and he curses someone who does not deserve to be cursed. The author says in this chapter: "The chapter on one who curses his slave and then frees him." He narrates with his authentic chain from the Lady Aisha: that Abu Bakr cursed some of his slaves, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abu Bakr! The cursers and the true! يَا أَبَا بَكرٍ ، اللَّعَّانِينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ ؟!
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 319
.
This is the wording in the author's narration, while others, such as al-Bayhaqi in *Shu'ab al-Iman*, have a clearer and more explicit wording, saying:
Are the cursers and the close friends of Allah the same? ألعَّانون وصدِّيقون ؟
. This means that these are two things that do not coexist: you are a close friend of Allah, and you also curse?
No, by the Ka'bah, these are two things that do not coexist, twice or three times. كلا وربِّ الكعبة ، أمران لا يجتمعان مرتين أو ثلاثا
That is, he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this phrase:
Are the cursers and the close friends of Allah the same? Are the cursers and the close friends of Allah the same? Are the cursers and the close friends of Allah the same? No, by the Ka'bah. ألعانون وصدِّيقون ؟ ألعانون وصدِّيقون ؟ ألعانون وصدِّيقون ؟ كلا وربِّ الكعبة
. So what did Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) do? This indicates the strength of his faith and the truth of his status as a close friend of Allah: Abu Bakr freed some of his slaves on that day as expiation for having cursed some of his slaves without right. After that, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) hastened in his repentance, as mentioned at the end of the hadith:
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came and said, "Do not do that again (i.e. curse someone)." ثم جاء النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقال : لا أعود
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 319
. He did not merely repent between himself and his Lord by freeing some of his slaves, but he also, after doing so, hastened to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), showing him his regret for what he had done and his resolve not to return to it.
