Is it permissible to trim the beard from below the neck?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it permissible to trim the beard from below the neck?

The Shaykh : What I see is that it is permissible to trim what is not part of the beard from what is in the category of what is adjacent to the beard. This is because his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
And let the beards grow وأعفوا اللحى
implies that this ruling does not extend to what is not beard, which is the hair growing on the neck. So by the indication of this implication, I see that there is no objection to trimming this hair. And this is what we understand from this implication, which is the evidence that some of our brothers who agree with us that it is not permissible to change anything of Allah’s creation (Blessed and Exalted is He) except for dire necessity or except for an explicit text that excludes it may not pay attention to. Here, I understand from his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
And let the beards grow وأعفوا اللحى
that specifying the beard, as opposed to the hair that grows below it on the neck, for leaving it to grow indicates the permissibility of trimming that hair which is not part of the beard.
This is what I have in answer to this question, and Allah knows best.

Another questioner : And trimming the hair...

The Shaykh : Ah, you are doing it like Jaha’s nail!

Another questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : This is Jaha’s nail...
And the hair growing on the cheeks is not in the category of the hair growing on the neck that is not part of the beard. Rather, the hair growing on the cheeks is part of the beard, as stated in the books of language, such as "al-Qamus" by al-Fayruzabadi and others.
And this reminds me, also, of something else, and with it I will end this session: that some people assume that the plucking mentioned in the hadith:
May Allah curse the women who pluck and those who have plucking done لَعَنَ الله النَّامصات المتنمصات
is a matter specific to plucking the eyebrows, and some may expand slightly to say: and plucking the hair that grows on the cheeks. So I say: plucking (namas) linguistically is complete pulling out. And as long as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used the term plucking in the first instance and said:
May Allah curse those who pluck لَعَنَ الله النامصات
, then by its generality it includes a woman plucking her hair in any part of her body except what is excluded, as was indicated earlier. For example, plucking the armpit hair is excluded, so obviously it does not fall under the generality of this text. As for any place that has not been excluded either by an explicit text or by dire necessity, as was mentioned earlier, it falls under the generality of this hadith:
May Allah curse the pluckers and the ones who get plucked لَعَنَ الله النامصات والمتنمِّصات
; because plucking in language is broader than plucking the eyebrow, and broader than plucking the cheek or the face. All of it is plucking, pulling out, in weight and meaning. So as long as this is the language, and as long as the Messenger said:
May Allah curse those who pluck لَعَنَ الله النامصات
, then the plucking here is in its generality and comprehensiveness as we mentioned. This is first.
And secondly: the conclusion of the hadith in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gives the reason for this severe warning for the women who pluck and those who have plucking done, to the end of what was mentioned in the hadith. The reason mentioned supports the generality and comprehensiveness; because he says:
Those who change the creation of Allah for the sake of beauty. المغيِّرات لخلق الله للحُسْن
. So what does the one who plucks her eyebrow mean? She changes Allah’s creation for beauty. What does the one who plucks her cheeks mean? Changing Allah’s creation for beauty. She plucks her chin—and this is a known issue in the books of jurisprudence—what does it mean? It means adorning and beautifying, changing Allah’s creation for beauty. What does the one who plucks the hair on her legs mean? It means, also, adorning and beautifying and changing Allah’s creation. So his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) at the end of this hadith:
Those who change the creation of Allah for the sake of beauty. المغيِّرات لخلق الله للحُسْن
confirms that the plucking in the hadith of the women who pluck is in its generality and comprehensiveness as long as it is for adorning and beautifying.
From here we say: what is excluded from the change whose doer is cursed is what the Lawgiver has permitted, as mentioned earlier, and what dire necessity has required, such as the elderly man whose eyebrow has grown long so that it almost blocks his view of the road in front of him. This is a dire necessity. And so it is said in everything that occurs regarding plucking and changing Allah’s creation.
And this is sufficient, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
