We are residents of Jeddah and we perform more than one 'Umrah in Ramadan and at other times. Is there any harm in that?

The questioner : The questioner says: We are residents of Jeddah and we perform more than one 'Umrah in Ramadan or at other times. Is there any doubt in this?

The Shaykh : Performing 'Umrah frequently is required, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
An Umra is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next العمرة إلى العمرة كفارة لما بينهما
Sahih Muslim 1349a
However, it was not the custom of the Salaf to perform it frequently. For this reason, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned in the *Fatawa* that performing two 'Umrahs consecutively and performing 'Umrah frequently is disliked (makruh) by the consensus of the Salaf. If this had been among the beloved matters, the Salaf would have been more eager for it than we are, and they would have repeated the 'Umrahs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was the most God-fearing of people and the most intense in his love for good, remained in Makkah for nineteen days during the Year of Conquest, shortening his prayers, and did not perform 'Umrah. And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), when she insisted on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to let her perform 'Umrah, ordered her brother 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr to take her out of the Haram to the Hal to perform 'Umrah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not guide him, meaning he did not instruct 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr to perform 'Umrah. If this had been prescribed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have guided him to it. And if its permissibility had been known to the Companions, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr would have done it, because he had gone out to the miqat. The miqat for the people of Makkah for 'Umrah is to go out to the nearest part of the Hal.
