The Shaykh : And the hadith following it, which is the tenth, is a valid hadith, and it provides a detailed account of the previous hadith of Jibril. It is narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Gabriel (ﷺ) came to me and said: I came to you last night and was prevented from entering simply because there were images at the door, for there was a decorated curtain with images on it in the house
Sunan Abi Dawud 4158Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Note the wording; Jibril said:
was prevented from entering simply because there were images at the door
Sunan Abi Dawud 4158Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Today, people tend to assume from the word "images" (tamathil) that it means idols, but that is not the case; as evidenced by his later statement:
for there was a decorated curtain with images on it in the house
Sunan Abi Dawud 4158Sahih (Al-Albani)
,
A curtain with images on it.
. Does this mean idols? No, rather the intended meaning is pictures; whether like the pictures on the door or the pictures on the curtain.
and there was a dog in the house
Sunan Abi Dawud 4158Sahih (Al-Albani)
This is part of Jibril's complete statement to the Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him), explaining the reason for his delay in coming at the appointed time he had set for the Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him). So Jibril (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
and there was a dog in the house. So order the head of the image which is in the house to be cut off so that it resembles the form of a tree; order the curtain to be cut up and made into two cushions spread out on which people may tread; and order the dog to be turned out.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4158Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It was narrated by Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Hibban in his "Sahih." Al-Tirmidhi said: It is a good, valid hadith. Hadiths of this type will come up in the section on keeping dogs, if Allah wills; that is, in the chapter or section warning against keeping dogs, there are hadiths that also prohibit image-making.
