Mentioning the hadith of al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him): "Know that in the body there is a small piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt"

The Shaykh : What confirms this reality for you is the hadith narrated by the two Shaykhs in their "Sahihayn" from the hadith of al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Both lawful (Halal) and unlawful things (Haram) are evident but in between them there are doubtful things·and most people have no knowledge about them. So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honor (i.e. keeps them blameless). And he who indulges in these doubtful things is like a shepherd who pastures (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it.
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
. Before that:
Know that every king has a protected area, and know that the protected area of Allah is His prohibitions, and know that whoever encroaches upon the protected area is likely to fall into it ألا وإن لكلِّ ملك حمى ، ألا وإن حمى الله محارمه ، ألا ومَن حام حول الحمى يوشك أن يقع فيه
, he said (peace and blessings be upon him) — and here is the point —:
Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart. ألا وإن في الجسد مضغةً إذا صلحت صلح الجسد كله ، وإذا فسدت فسد الجسد كله ؛ أَلَا وهي القلب
Sahih al-Bukhari 52
.
In this hadith is the explicit statement of what we said in the introduction; namely, that the soundness of the heart is through the soundness of the body, and the soundness of the body is through the soundness of the heart. The matter of this moral or spiritual soundness, and the connection of each of the body and the heart, is exactly as it is in the physical, medical, material aspect. Just as a human body cannot be upright or sound if its heart is sick, and just as this heart cannot be sound and healthy while the body is sick and weak; each of them supports the other in strength or weakness; as is the case in the material aspect, so it is in the spiritual, religious aspects.
This hadith is authentic and explicit for this reason; because it says: if the body is corrupt, the heart is corrupt, and if the heart is corrupt, the body is corrupt:
Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart. ألا وإن في الجسد مضغة إذا صلحت صلح الجسد كله ، وإذا فسدت فسد الجسد كله ؛ ألا وهي القلب
Sahih al-Bukhari 52
.
