The questioner : But it is reported from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he would trim his moustache until the whiteness of the skin was visible?

The Shaykh : I have already referred to this.

The questioner : Yes, and he is the narrator of the hadith:
Trim your mustaches حفُّوا الشارب
?

The Shaykh : No problem.

The questioner : And the principle you adopt in such a case is that the narrator is more knowledgeable about what he narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And he did not act upon this except because he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) trim his moustache until?

The Shaykh : This is correct speech that aligns with the principle, but here the principle does not apply; because we have a Prophetic action. If we had a hadith that the Messenger (peace be upon him) did not trim his beard, we would not take the action of Ibn 'Umar in that case. But when we lack such a text, we say that the one who narrated the hadith and performed an action is more aware of what he narrates, so we considered his action. This is unlike the case here; because here the action of the Messenger (peace be upon him) indicated to us that combination. Then there is another thing and a major difference: in that case, we do not find anyone who differs from Ibn 'Umar, but rather we find those who agree with him. But here, we found many who differed from him. So the two situations or issues differed, and the principle failed to apply here, unlike there.

The questioner: Yes.
