Is the entire mustache taken, or only part of it, and what is the evidence?

The Shaykh : What is this "part"?
Its explanation is found in his action (peace be upon him). Here is "the crux of the matter", as they say. Imam Abu Dawud narrated in his *Sunan*, and Imam Ahmad in his *Musnad*, from al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah:
A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his mustache had grown long—meaning it had extended beyond the upper lip—so he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that a miswak and a clipper be brought to him. He placed the miswak under the part of the mustache that had grown long, then clipped it.
. This action defines the intended meaning of all those words: that the intention is not to remove the entire mustache, but rather to remove what extends beyond the upper lip. This is what is meant by his saying:
Trim the mustache and let the beard grow. حفوا الشارب واعفوا عن اللحى
. Thus, his action (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in this hadith clarifies all the meanings we mentioned earlier, specifying that the intention is to take what exceeds the upper lip, not what is above it. For this reason, it is reported from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he would leave his mustache intact and not remove it from its root; rather, he would let his beard grow long. It is also reported in the *Muwatta* of Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) with a sound chain: "It was part of 'Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) nature that when he became angry, he would puff out his cheeks and twist his mustache". This indicates that the entire mustache is not taken, but only what extends beyond the lips.
Here is a medical point. After establishing that the Prophetic ruling is to preserve the mustache but remove what extends beyond the upper lip, there are two medical benefits in this:
The first is that if a man is lax with his mustache and it grows long over his upper lip, there is a type of uncleanliness, especially when he eats, if there is grease or the like in it. Removing what has grown over the lips provides cleanliness that is consistent with Islam, which is characterized in all its legislation by maintaining cleanliness.
On the other hand, leaving the mustache on the upper lip has another medical benefit, as some doctors say. This is apparent, and Allah knows best, and is an observed fact: it acts as a trap for the germs that surround a person, particularly in his nostrils. It finds there a kind of net that catches these germs and prevents them from entering the nasal passage. This is the wisdom behind the Lawgiver preserving the mustache and removing what extends beyond the upper lip. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and it was the practice of him and some of his Companions who knew his guidance.
We ask Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to inspire us to follow our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in everything he brought to us from his Lord.
I see that some of those present have begun to feel drowsy, so I see that you may leave if you wish, whoever among you wishes. And as for whoever has energy, like the so-called Shaykh, I am sitting with him.
