The Shaykh : The hadith that follows is also authentic, as indicated by the tracing of the hadith. It says: And from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) — she said: I said: O Messenger of Allah. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said. It appears there is an error here that was not noticed!
No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn. ما من مصيبة تُصيب المسلم إلا كفَّرَ الله عنه بها حتى الشوكة يُشاكها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5640
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and in a narration by Muslim:
A believer does not undergo (the trouble) of running a thorn or more than that when Allah effaces his sins. لا يصيب المؤمنَ شوكةٌ فما فوقها إلا نقَصَ الله بها من خطيئته
Sahih Muslim 2572c
, and in another:
except that by it, Allah will raise him a level, and erase a sin from him for it إلا رفَعَه الله بها درجة وحطَّ عنه بها خطيئة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 388Sahih (Darussalam)
. In this narration, there is an addition to the previous narrations that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) also raises his degree by this calamity, in addition to removing a bad deed and a sin from him. It says: And in another of his narrations — meaning Muslim's — a young man from Quraysh came to 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was at Mina, and they were laughing. She said: What are you laughing at? They said: So-and-so fell on the pole of a tent, and his neck or his eye nearly went. She said: Do not laugh; for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
If a Muslim runs a thorn or (gets into trouble) severe than this, there is assured for him (a higher) rank and his sins are obliterated. ما من مسلمٍ يُشاك بشوكةٍ فما فوقها إلا كُتِبَتْ له بها درجة ، ومُحِيَتْ عنه بها خطيئة
Sahih Muslim 2572a
.
This is like the previous hadiths; indeed, one of Muslim's narrations states that Allah (Mighty and Majestic), in addition to removing the bad deeds of the one who is struck by a calamity, also writes for him a degree by it. However, in the story of 'A'ishah with those people, there is a warning and education for Muslims when such an incident occurs among them; for often one of them is struck by a calamity, and his companions around him laugh at it without realizing that what this person was struck with is actually good for him; so what are they laughing at? The meaning of this warning from the Lady 'A'ishah is that it is not the proper conduct of a Muslim toward his Muslim brother to laugh when he sees his Muslim brother struck by a calamity; no, or to rejoice and be pleased on the grounds of what? Consolation. Rather, he should remember that this is a good that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) intended for this Muslim, and He decreed that calamity for him; so it should not be met with laughter and merriment.
