Discussion of the issue of repeating the greeting with every handshake and that it is a religious innovation.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And my starting point for the third issue is from the great, general Islamic principle:
And beware of newly invented matters; for every newly invented matter is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire. وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور ؛ فإن كل محدثة ، وكل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
, and his saying (peace be upon him):
Whoever introduces into our affair something that does not belong to it is rejected. مَن أحدث في أمرِنا ما ليس منه فهو ردٌّ
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1261
, and his saying (peace be upon him):
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire كل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
.
What is this issue?
The person entering says, "Peace be upon you," and shakes hands; shaking hands is a recommended practice. He goes to the second person and says, "Peace be upon you," with a greeting for every handshake, and so on. How many people are sitting? Ten or eleven greetings. This is not from the Sunnah. Rather, the person entering the gathering gives one greeting, and then if he wants to complete the recommended practice, he shakes hands with those present. This is feasible if the number is limited, but if it is a large crowd, it involves great difficulty for the greeter to shake hands with everyone present there.
The point is: the recommended practice when a person enters a gathering is to say, "Peace be upon you," and then if he wishes to do what is more complete and better, he shakes hands with those present. But to pair a greeting with every handshake is from the newly invented matters. And you have known the saying of the Messenger:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error وإيَّاكم ومحدثات الأمور ؛ فإن كل محدثة بدعة ، وكل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
This is what came to mind as a reminder, and the reminder benefits the believers.
