The Innovation of Handshaking After Prayer

The sixth question from Fatwa number ( 16843 )
Q 6: The Turkish imam adopted the custom of handshaking after the 'Id al-Fitr prayer, and this has been going on for a long time, for four years or more. That is, after each of the five prayers, once the prayer is finished, the imam stands in the mihrab, and the worshippers come to him. The first one shakes his hand and stands beside him, then the second one shakes his hand and stands beside the first, then the third one shakes his hand and stands beside the second, and so on, one after another, until they are all done, even if there are hundreds of them. The Arab imam also started doing this handshaking in the Fajr prayer. When we asked him about it, he said: "We saw our Turkish brothers doing it this way." We forbade him from it, but he did not stop. What is your answer to this matter?
A 6: Making it a habit to shake hands after the obligatory prayer, between the imam and the worshippers, or between the worshippers themselves, all of this is a religious innovation (bid'ah) with no basis. It is obligatory to leave it off; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718b , and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray with his Companions, and so did his successors after him. They used to lead the Muslims in prayer, and it is not reported that he committed to handshaking after every prayer. The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their newly invented ones,
and every newly invented matter is a religious innovation (bid'ah), and every religious innovation (bid'ah) is misguidance. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
