If multiple wrongs are present in a person, forbidding them begins with the one that is the gravest sin

His Eminence the Shaykh: If you see a man engaged in several wrongs, such as shaving his beard, smoking, and letting his garments hang below the ankles, which of these wrongs is more deserving and more entitled to being forbidden?
Can one combine all of them? The questioner: That is not compatible.

The Shaykh: Why?The questioner: It is difficult for the self to accept.

The Shaykh: Which is the greater sin? Letting the garment hang below the ankles is the greatest of them; because letting the garment hang below the ankles is among the major sins, and whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify him, nor speak to him, and for him is a painful punishment. Therefore, beginning by forbidding him from letting his garment hang below the ankles is more appropriate because it is the greatest, then shaving the beard, then smoking, because the least of these wrongs is smoking.

The questioner: O Shaykh, he is smoking while being forbidden; I found him on the road smoking, should I forbid him?The Shaykh: What I understood from your words is that a man possesses these characteristics,Meaning: that he has shaved his beard, let his garment hang below the ankles, and smokes.

The questioner: Is he engaged in this state, smoking? The Shaykh: Is he smoking now, and is his beard present or not?The questioner: No, it is not present.

The Shaykh: Okay, he is shaved and his garment is hanging below the ankles, so start with the garment.

The questioner: And I leave him to smoke, O Shaykh? The Shaykh: No, you do not leave him completely,You are saying: Combining the three is difficult for him,So we say: Start with the most severe; because smoking, may Allah reward you, he wants to smoke this (cigarette) and be done with it, but the garment continues with him, and it is also greater; dragging the garment out of arrogance is greater than smoking.
