The Ruling on Zakah on a Debt

First: O Shaykh! We love you for the sake of Allah.
Second: I sold a car to a person, and (5,000) riyals remained owed to me by him. It has been several years, and then the person disappeared, and I do not know where he is. So, should I pay zakah on it or not?
First: May Allah love you, for you have loved us for His sake.
Second: No.
There is no zakah on a debt owed by a person who is unable to pay, except if you receive it, in which case you pay zakah on it for one year. And now, as long as you do not know where the man went, you owe no zakah.
We conclude this session by asking Allah for us and for you beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and that He make us and you among those in whom the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is realized: (Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise) .
And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
