Is there zakah on a debt?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 16583 )
Q1: Is there zakah on a debt if it remains with the debtor for one year, two years, or more, and some of it is repaid while some is not, and how is the zakah paid?
A1: If the debt is owed by a person who is unable to pay, and the creditor does not know whether he will be able to recover it or not, then zakah is not obligatory on it until it is received, and a full lunar year has passed after its receipt. However, if the debt is owed by a solvent person whom the creditor can recover it from when he demands it, then zakah becomes obligatory on it every time a lunar year passes while it is in the debtor's liability. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
