The Ruling on a Woman Covering Her Face and Hands

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! What is your opinion of those who take the differences of opinion regarding hijab as their basis, cite weak hadiths, and rely on interpretations based on personal opinion, such as: Tafsir al-Jalalayn by al-Suyuti? Is this response sufficient for them, and may Allah reward you with good?

Our answer to this is: We must know that the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed on the obligation of covering the face and hands, but the stronger position, which is supported by evidence and consideration, is: that covering the face is obligatory. Whoever wishes to benefit from this should refer to what the scholars have written on this topic. And the most comprehensive of them is the book: Returning to the hijab, it has been expanded upon and clarified regarding what is right in it. It is sufficient for a discerning person to know what evil and calamity result from uncovering the face in our present time. Faith is weak and desire is strong; because the youth have health and free time, great evil results from this.
As for the one who sees it as permissible and argues with weak hadiths or with defective reasons, his reckoning is with Allah (Mighty and Majestic).

But I saw a statement by some scholars that said: Hijab in this era is obligatory by consensus; because those who said it is not obligatory made an exception for when fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) is feared by uncovering faces and hands. He said: In this era, it is not possible to be safe from fitnah, except if the uncovering is by a woman for whom uncovering is permissible by explicit text of the Qur'an, such as: old women who have no hope of marriage. So he says: The scholars' (may Allah have mercy on them) reasoning, or their consensus, that if there is fitnah, then covering the face is necessary, implies that a woman in these eras must cover her face.
