Ruling on raising the lower garment to the middle of the shin
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! What is your Eminence’s opinion regarding what some of the common people say about those who are strict in their practice, who wear their lower garment to the middle of the shin: that they are deviating or innovating in this Sunnah, and they may warn their children from sitting with anyone who wears his lower garment to the middle of the shin?
This is their ignorance of the Sunnah. So the one who says: Raising the lower garment, the trousers, or the robe to the middle of the shin is not a Sunnah for one who is ignorant of the Sunnah; rather, it is undoubtedly a Sunnah, but it is a Sunnah that is not obligatory.Meaning: It is permissible for you to wear it from the middle of the shin up to above the ankle, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke of the one who let his robe hang below the ankle and was silent about the rest. It is well known that the Companions used to let their garments hang lower than the middle of the shin. This is Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saying to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “One side of my lower garment sags on me unless I hold it in place. If my lower garment had been to the middle of my shin, then when it hung down to the ground, my private parts would have been exposed.” This indicates that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) wore it this way and that way.And the people in this matter are of three categories: One group is strict and believes that this is the mark of the believer, and that whoever does not have his garment to the middle of his shin has a deficiency in his faith.
And among them are those who hold the opposite view, believing that the middle of the shin is a display of vanity and that it is not appropriate, and they may even deny the Sunnah, as I mentioned in this question.
And among them are those who say: The Sunnah is to wear it to the middle of the shin, but if it hangs lower and does not go below the ankle, there is nothing wrong with it.And it is not said: If a person does this, it is not according to the Sunnah. The Companions in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), the best of the Companions without exception, Abu Bakr, and we know from this authentic hadith in the two Sahihs that his lower garment was not to the middle of his shin; because if his lower garment had been to the middle of his shin and sagged on him until it reached the ground or went below the ankle, it would have resulted in the exposure of his private parts.
