Exegesis of Verses from Surat al-Inshiqaq
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
To proceed: This is the second session of the month of Safar, year 1414 AH, on Thursday, the tenth of Safar.
As usual, we begin by discussing what is made easy of the Book of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). We have finished the exegesis of Surat al-Naba' up to the end of Surat al-Mutaffifin.
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: [al-Inshiqaq:1] We have previously discussed the Basmala, and clarified that the Basmala is a verse of the Book of Allah in its own right, not part of the surah before it, nor part of the surah after it. It is only included at the beginning of surahs, except for Surat al-Bara'ah. It is not a verse of al-Fatihah, even though it is written in the mushafs as a verse. However, the stronger opinion, which is the school of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him), and the view of most of his followers, is that it is not a verse of al-Fatihah. This is what is indicated by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, reporting from Allah: (I divided the prayer between Me and My servant into two halves,When he says: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds; He said: My servant praised Me,And when he said: The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful; He said: My servant praised Me,And when he said: Master of the Day of Judgment; He said: My servant glorified Me,And when he said: You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help,He said: This is between Me and My servant,When he says: Guide us to the straight path;He said: and this is for My servant, and for My servant is what he asked for) .
And thus the first verse is: (PRAISE BE TO ALLAH, LORD OF THE WORLDS),The second: (THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL),And the third is: (MASTER OF THE DAY OF JUDGMENT),And the fourth: (YOU ALONE WE WORSHIP AND YOU ALONE WE ASK FOR HELP),And the fifth: (GUIDE US TO THE STRAIGHT PATH),And the sixth: (THE PATH OF THOSE UPON WHOM YOU HAVE BESTOWED FAVOR),And the seventh is: (NOT THE PATH OF THOSE WHO EARNED YOUR ANGER, NOR OF THOSE WHO WENT ASTRAY).
This is in accordance with what the Sunnah indicates, and it is also in accordance with the surah in both wording and meaning: As for the wording: because of the suitability of the verses in length; for if "The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor" to the end of the surah were a single verse, it would not be suitable in length with what precedes it. Also, if it were a verse, it would not be [al-Fatihah:5] in the middle of the verses, but rather, on this calculation, it would be the fifth; for the first three verses are all for the right of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and the last three verses are all for the right of the human being, [al-Fatihah:6-7], and the fourth, middle verse is between Allah and the servant,This is the stronger opinion that the beginning of al-Fatihah is: [al-Fatihah:2].
