The Danger of the Spread of Backbiting Among People
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We see some people now spreading statements about specific individuals, or even spreading statements or actions attributed to scholars who neither said nor did them, or spreading statements and actions attributed to those in authority and those in command who neither said nor did them.
Backbiting rulers among scholars and princes, such as the king, the minister, and others, is more severe than backbiting ordinary people; because backbiting rulers generates hatred for the ruler, and when a person hates his ruler, he no longer submits to his command, and the ruler does not do a single good thing without it being hidden from this person’s sight, nor does he do a single evil thing without it being in his sight and heart. Why? Because he hates and detests him due to the things that have been spread. And the wise poet said:
The eye of satisfaction is blind to every defect, just as the eye of anger reveals the faults.
So, do not think that a person who is angry will spread a good deed of one he is angry with; but this angry, hateful person spreads all the evils and remains silent about the good deeds, as if they never happened.
Backbiting rulers generates hatred for the ruler, hatred of him, and disobedience to his command, and it turns his good deeds into evils. This is dangerous for the entire society; because when affairs become chaos with no control, the system collapses and the community disintegrates. If we spread, for example, the faults of rulers, does this improve the situation in any way? If it did improve it, it would be good; but it does not improve it, rather it increases the severity of the matter and increases the ruler’s alertness, leading him to fall into what he has no right to fall into, which is accusing some of the innocent of matters from which they are innocent, and harm results for the one who spreads the faults and for others.
Is backbiting an easy sin, or is it among the major sins? Rather, it is among the major sins.
Ibn Abd al-Qawi says in his Daliliyyah fiqh poem:
It has been said: Backbiting and talebearing are minor, but both are major according to the text of Ahmad.
Meaning: Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him).
So backbiting is among the major sins,Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: [Al-Hujurat: 12] , does anyone love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No one loves to eat the flesh of his dead brother, and Allah likened backbiting to eating the flesh of the dead, because the one who is backbitten is not present to defend himself, like the dead person when you eat him, he is dead and cannot defend himself, and this is a likeness to the ugliest of things, which indicates that backbiting is detested by Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and it must be detested by the person of reason;Because the Exalted said: [Al-Hujurat: 12] .
