Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (Have you then considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza)
The topic of this session today is discussing what has been made easy regarding verses from Surat al-Najm. We had previously reached the verses in the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
[al-Najm: 18] When Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, explained what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw of the great signs of his Lord in the horizons, He said:
Have you then considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza
[al-Najm: 19] ?And this interrogation is for belittling and lowering, meaning: The lowering of the rank of these idols mentioned by Allah, Mighty and Majestic, means: Tell us, after you have heard what you have heard of the great signs of Allah, tell us about the status of these idols, what is their value, what is their rank, what is their honor?
Have you then considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza, and Manat the third, the last?
[al-Najm: 19-20] Three famous idols among the Arabs whom they worship besides Allah, and they submit to them as they submit to Allah, and they draw near to them as they draw near to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And yet, they believe that they do not benefit them in times of hardship. When they board a ship, they call upon Allah, sincere to Him in religion, and they know that none can save them from this hardship except the Lord of the worlds. But Satan suggested to them and inspired them to worship these idols, which they claim bring them closer to Allah the Exalted,As Allah said about them:
We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position
[al-Zumar: 3] But in reality, they do not bring them closer to Allah; rather, they distance them from Him.
Have you then considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza, and Manat the third, the last?
[al-Najm: 19-20] The third, in relation to the two before it, (al-ukhra) means: the later one, and it seems—Allah knows best—to be lower in rank than al-Lat and al-‘Uzza among the Arabs.
