The Shaykh : This is the hadith that the author also cited from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever swears by al-Lat and al-'Uzza, let him say: There is no god but Allah من حلف باللات والعزى فليقل : لا إله إلا الله
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 1:623
:
Al-Lat: an idol worshipped by the polytheists in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, and so was al-'Uzza, as the Exalted said:
Have you seen al-Lat and al-'Uzza أفرأيتم اللات والعزى
: And they used to swear by them just as they swore by Allah, so a person would say: By al-Lat, or by al-'Uzza. If a person says: By al-Lat and al-'Uzza, this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) that is treated by sincerity. Therefore, he said: Let him say: There is no god but Allah, to treat the thing with its opposite. How is shirk treated? By sincerity. If he swears by other than Allah, let him say: There is no god but Allah.
And whoever says: 'Come let me gamble with you!' Then let him give in charity. ومن قال تعال أقامرك فليتصدق
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1545Sahih (Darussalam)
: This is also treating the thing with its opposite. Gambling: competing for a stake, which people call a bet. I bet you that this is such and such, and they bet on slaughtering a sheep or on dirhams or the like. The one who says this has said something forbidden, so he must repent. Part of his repentance is to give charity in place of what they expect to take through this gambling. This is from the category of treating the thing with its opposite.
Likewise, it is said: Whoever neglects an obligatory duty, his treatment is to repent to Allah and to increase in righteous deeds, so that this negligence of the obligatory duty is treated by increasing in righteous deeds. We ask Allah the Exalted to accept our repentance and yours, and to guide us to what He loves and is pleased with.
