Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (They used to sleep but a little of the night)
Then he specified a type of this excellence, saying: [Surat al-Dhariyat: 17] It was said that (ma) is superfluous in the wording, but it is not superfluous in the meaning,And the intended meaning is: They used to sleep but a little,Meaning: they do not sleep except a little, and what do they do in this wakefulness?They do what Allah mentioned in Surat al-Muzzammil: [Surat al-Muzzammil: 20] .
They do not stay up for amusement and idle talk, nor do they wake up to such things, but they reduce their sleep to devote themselves to the obedience of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
Then he specified a type of this excellence, saying:
They used to sleep but little of the night,
كَانُوا قَلِيلاً مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَIndeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَى مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَائِفَةٌ مِنَ الَّذِينَ مَعَكَThey do not stay up for amusement and idle talk, nor do they wake up to such things, but they reduce their sleep to devote themselves to the obedience of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
