The ruling on greeting the people of the graveyards for one who is passing by them

His Eminence the Shaykh: Is it permissible to greet the cemetery if one is in a car or in some other situation?

Meaning: Does the one passing through a graveyard greet or not? If the graveyard is open and has no wall, there is no harm in greeting. If it is enclosed by a wall, do not greet; because there is no meaning to it, since the one passing by the wall, with a wall between him and the graves, is like one in his house, and there is no difference. Therefore, we say: If you pass by an open graveyard, there is no harm in greeting. If you pass by a walled graveyard, do not greet. For this reason, were it not for the martyrs at Uhud, openings would have been made in the door, and I think it is a mesh.A person stands in it and observes the graves, we said: Do not greet them; because they are hidden from you, and greeting the graveyard with a wall between you and it is like greeting them if you were in your house. And no one says: Stand in your house and greet the people of the graveyards.
