The Ruling on Treating with Herbs and Medicines and Writing Verses on Paper

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A woman who would miscarry every time she became pregnant went to a woman known for her treatments; She gave her treatment for miscarriage and said: You have a slippery womb,And she gave her medicines and herbs and said to her: On the second day of menstruation, you place it in the embers, then you direct this smoke toward the private parts, and it enters the private parts.

The Shaykh: The smoke? The questioner: Yes,Meaning: Is this considered a form of sorcery or the like?
By Allah, on what basis? This woman who prescribed the medicine for the woman who was miscarrying, does she have any proof for that? The questioner: I do not know, she gave her several medicines.

The Shaykh: If the matter were just eating or drinking, it would be less problematic.

The questioner: Some of it is eaten and some of it is drunk.

The Shaykh: There is no harm in that; some of it is eaten and some of it is placed in water and drunk. There is no issue with that; but what is the connection between the smoke that enters the private parts and the preservation of the pregnancy? The questioner: That is what I am complaining about.

The Shaykh: Yes, I see that she should not use the last one, the smoke. She should not use it. The miscarriage may be caused by the woman’s weakness, or by excessive work, or by her slipping, for example—Meaning: Stumbling—or it may be caused by her bending her waist. The important thing is that she should avoid the apparent causes that lead to miscarriage. She may drink the medicines that were prescribed; but we do not approve of this matter of fumigation.

The questioner: What they call the "azimah" (the default ruling), where verses are written in saffron. Does she drink it?The Shaykh: There is no harm in that, if she writes it on a vessel and then drinks it.

The questioner: Yes, the paper? The Shaykh: There is no harm, there is nothing wrong with it. This was reported from the Salaf (the earliest generations) if the verses are from the Qur'an or Prophetic hadiths.
