The ruling on borrowing money in one currency and repaying it in another
If a person borrows a sum of money from another and repays it in a different currency—for example, he takes it in Saudi riyals and goes to Kuwait, then repays it in Kuwaiti dinars—is this permissible?
This occurred during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We used to sell camels for dirhams and take dinars in exchange, and sell for dinars and take dirhams in exchange. So I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about that, and he said: (There is no harm in taking them at the price of the day, as long as you do not separate and there is nothing between you). So if you take dirhams from the Saudi currency and settle it in Kuwait with the Kuwaiti dinar, there is no harm, but on the condition that it is according to the value there, meaning what the Saudi riyal is worth, and you give the value without any increase or decrease.
