Bloodletting by Cupping
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The sixth: Bloodletting by cupping,Meaning: If a person undergoes cupping and blood comes out of him, he breaks his fast and his fast becomes invalid;By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (The one who cups and the one who is cupped have broken their fast) Imam Ahmad authenticated this hadith, and he is one of the imams of hadith and jurisprudence, indeed the imam of the people of the Sunnah (may Allah have mercy on him). Because of his scrupulousness, his knowledge of hadith, and his jurisprudence, one feels reassured by this opinion,Meaning: that bloodletting by cupping invalidates the fast,But if someone says: The invalidation of the fast for the one who is cupped is apparent; because he has let out blood that causes the body to weaken and dissolve, and necessitates the need for food and drink. But what about the one who cups?
That the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) only said: (The one who cups and the one who is cupped have broken their fast) This refers to a known, customary cupper who cupped at that time. At that time, they used to cup with glass vessels containing small tubes which the cupper would suck until the blood reached this tube, and he would know that he had started to collect the blood.
The Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Because perhaps, as he draws the blood, some of it reaches his stomach without him realizing it,And for this he said: (The one who cups and the one who is cupped have broken their fast) .
So based on this: If cupping is performed and blood appears from the one who breaks the fast? Only the cupper or only the one who is cupped? Both break their fast, the cupper and the one who is cupped.
Based on that: If the fast is obligatory, such as Ramadan, making up a missed fast, expiation, or fidyah, and the like, is it permissible to undergo cupping or not?Answer: No, it is not permissible to undergo cupping, because invalidating an obligation is forbidden, unless one is compelled to do so and fainting comes upon him due to the agitation of the blood, and he needs to undergo cupping. In that case, we say: He should undergo cupping and break his fast: eat and drink.
