First: Know, may Allah bless you, that the original ruling regarding musical instruments is prohibition. This is the original ruling.As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his family said: (There will be people from my Ummah who will consider lawful fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments) meaning: they will consider lawful the forbidden private parts, wearing silk, wine, and musical instruments. So the original ruling for all musical instruments, including hand drums, drums, flutes, and others, is prohibition. And since the original ruling is prohibition, we do not depart from this generality and this original ruling except for what evidence indicates is permissible. What evidence indicates is permissible is the hand drum on occasions, whether for marriage, the festival, or the arrival of an absentee. This has its value in society. As for marriage, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that the hand drum be played and singing be done in it. As for the day of the festival, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the two girls who were singing on the days of the festival, so Abu Bakr rebuked them, and he said: (Let them be, for these are days of festival) As for the arrival of an absentee, it is because a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) after his arrival in Madinah and said: (O Messenger of Allah! I vowed that if Allah returns you safely, I would beat the drum before you.) He said to her: (Fulfill your vow.) If it had been forbidden, he would not have commanded her to fulfill her vow. Apart from that, it is not permissible. Therefore, if a person uses the hand drum in a recording on an occasion other than these, it is not permissible.
