Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (There is no private conversation of three but He is the fourth of them)
Allah the Exalted said: [Surah al-Mujadilah: 7] Four things, (of three in private conversation) meaning: there is no group of three in private conversation but Allah is with them, and He is their fourth. [Al-Mujadila 58:7] What is less than that? Two. More? Seven or more, or six or more. [Al-Mujadila 58:7] Meaning: wherever they were,And the companionship here is not companionship of indwelling, meaning: that Allah is present in our places with us. This is not the case. The Salaf did not understand it in this way, and no one who esteems Allah with His due esteem can imagine this false meaning. Allah is not with us in the place here. No.So the meaning would be:[Al-Mujadila 58:7] Meaning: He is aware of them, encompassing them, hearing their words, seeing their actions, and having authority over them. This is its meaning. And the meaning is not: that He is in the places where we are! No, by Allah. Whoever claims that has thought the worst of Allah, the worst of all. We ask Allah for well-being. Because this false, defective, and deniable understanding necessitates either that Allah is one but divided, part of Him here and part there, or that He is multiplied by the multiplication of places. Because there are people here, people in the market, people in the mosque, people in the air, and people in the sea. Is Allah divided? Is Allah multiplied? No, by Allah. And what necessitates from that is even more vile: that if you were in the bathroom—in the toilet—Allah would be with you in the same place.
Does anyone say this?! By Allah, only a person who does not know Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and does not esteem Him with His due esteem says this. O, Glory be to Allah! How do you imagine that your Lord, the Most High, the Supreme, is with you in the toilet—we ask Allah for well-being? A person never imagines this, not at all, except a person who diminishes Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with the greatest diminishment.
So how do we reconcile His saying: (But He is with them)? We reconcile this: That companionship does not necessitate indwelling or being located in a place. The Arabs say: We are still walking, and the moon is with us.
And where is its place? In the sky.He says: We are still walking, and Suhail is with us.
And Suhail is in the sky. These are small creations in comparison to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and yet they are with the person while they are above.
So Allah is with us, and He is above everything. Nothing of our deeds is hidden from Him. You must hold this belief. If you die upon the first belief: If you believe that Allah is with you in the place, I do not know if you will die a disbeliever or a believer. Because this is the ultimate diminishment of Allah the Exalted.
Allah the Exalted said:
There is in no private conversation three but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are
