What is the effect of sin on the performance of obedience and on the sinner? Is it a spiritual effect or a physical one? Because we see that a person may be in a state of sin while still praying and reading.

The questioner : He says:The questioner : Your Eminence, what is the effect of sin on the performance of obedience? Is it a spiritual effect or a physical effect? Since a person may be in a state of sin while praying and reading the Qur'an, how does the effect of sin manifest on the act of obedience or on the person himself?

The Shaykh : The effect of sin is bad, and a person may be punished with a great punishment, which is being turned away from the religion of Allah, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
And if they turn away - then know that Allah only intends to afflict them with some of their [own] sins فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُصِيبَهُمْ بِبَعْضِ ذُنُوبِهِمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:49]
So the person who commits sins is in great danger. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, if Allah does not pardon him, his good deeds and bad deeds will be weighed. If the bad deeds outweigh the good, he will enter the Fire to be purified from them, unless Allah pardons him. If the good deeds and bad deeds are equal, he will be among the people of the 'Arafah, held between Paradise and the Fire, where he will see the people of the Fire and the people of Paradise, and his inclination will be toward Paradise. I ask Allah to make me and you among the people of Paradise.
Furthermore, sins have physical punishments, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
(96) And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning." (97) Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep? (98) Or did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were at play? (99) Then did they feel secure from the plan of Allah? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allah except the losing people.
[Al-A'raf 7:96-99]
And He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said:
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
[Ar-Rum 30:41]
And among the sins with the most impact is eating what is forbidden, which has become widespread and notorious in our current time. Eating what is forbidden becomes a cause for the rejection of supplication; that is, a person supplicates but it is not answered if he eats what is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And he mentioned a man: 'Who is undertaking a long journey, whose hair is dishevelled and he is covered with dust. He raises his hands to the heavens and says: "O Lord! O Lord!" Yet his food is from the unlawful, his drink is from the unlawful, his clothing is from the unlawful, and he was nourished by the unlawful. So how can that be accepted?' ذكر الرجل أشعث أغبر يطيل السفر يمد يده إلى السماء يا رب يا رب، ومطعمه حرام وملبسه حرام وغذي بالحرام فأنى يستجاب لذلك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2989Sahih (Darussalam)
And how much of what is forbidden exists in our time! Riba (usury or interest) is present, gambling is present, deception is present, lying is present, concealment of defects is present, oppression of workers is present, and there are many things that one is unable to count all of which involve eating what is forbidden. That is, if a person deceives in his sale and earns one dirham out of ten, that dirham which entered his possession is forbidden and it corrupts his wealth. Riba has now become, and may Allah protect us, publicly declared both in practice and in speech. A few days ago, a notice was published by one of the banks stating that whoever wants to earn twelve times his salary should come to them. That is, they treat people like chickens, giving them grain laced with poison, and the chicken eats without knowing, and its intestines are cut. How does the process work? He goes to the bank and they say to him, "Come, your salary is one thousand riyals every month, so we will give you now twelve thousand riyals in cash," and they place the guarantees they deem necessary for security. Then they say, "When the year is completed, you will be paid twelve thousand plus such and such percent." This is explicit riba, combining both riba al-nasi'ah (usury of deferment) and riba al-fadl (usury of excess in a like-for-like exchange), meaning it combines both types, and may Allah protect us. Some people may be deceived and think that there is nothing wrong with it, but we are now conveying the message; it is obligatory upon us to convey that this is forbidden and that it is explicit riba, and it is not permissible to deal with it. We ask Allah the Exalted to awaken the authorities among us regarding the dealings of those who wanted to establish the systems of capitalism in the lands of the Muslims. We ask Allah to turn them back on their heels in disappointment, and to purify our lands from people like them. Yes.
