Utilizing the vacation to help the father in his business.

The Shaykh : There is also a type of person who utilizes this vacation to help his father in his trade, his farming, or something similar. This is undoubtedly good, as it is part of being dutiful to one's parents. However, in this case, if a man has children, some of whom help him in his farming and trade and some who do not, is it permissible for him to prefer the one who helps him over the others with some money? The answer is: If the one who helps him intends thereby to be dutiful to his parents and to earn the reward of the Hereafter, there is no need to give him anything, because this person who helped his father intended the reward of the Hereafter, so let him have the reward of the Hereafter. But if he sees that he is looking to have his father give him something exclusively for him, because he is helping his father and working with him in farming, trade, or otherwise, then at that time he should give him what he gives to a man who is not his son, meaning: he should set for him a fixed amount each month, or give him a shared share of the profit if he works in trade, agriculture, or something similar. Why? So that he does not prefer some of his children over others, for preferring some children over others in matters other than the obligatory maintenance is forbidden. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disavowed testifying to such a matter when Bashir ibn Sa'd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a gift to his son Nu'man ibn Bashir, and the mother of Nu'man said: "I am not satisfied until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) testifies to it." So Bashir went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him that he had given a gift to his son Nu'man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to testify to it, because this is injustice, and he disavowed it, and he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 3542. The Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them) used to be just among their children, even in kissing. For example, if he kissed a boy who was five or six years old, and his brother was present, he would kiss the second one. Why? So that he would not be unjust, even in this matter. Likewise, in speech, one must be equal among his children in words; do not speak to one with anger and to the other with satisfaction, do not look at one with a frowning face and the other with a satisfied face. One must be just as much as one is able.
