Clarifying the Purpose of I'tikaf

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : On the occasion of mentioning i'tikaf, I say that the purpose of i'tikaf is to stand in prayer, or rather, to devote oneself to worship. The purpose is not to confine oneself in the mosque without engaging in worship or dhikr. Many people perform i'tikaf in the mosques, but you find them wasting their time, or more accurately, killing time in things that have no benefit. Their companions come to them and they converse with them about matters that are of no use.
In fact, some of it may even be harmful, and this is contrary to the purpose of i'tikaf.
I'tikaf is staying in the mosque to devote oneself to the worship of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Yes, there is nothing wrong with speaking to one of your relatives, family members, or companions in a conversation that is beneficial, provided it does not waste time, because
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to have Safiyyah bint Huyayy, one of his wives, come to him, and he would converse with her for a while and did not prevent her from doing so. النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كانت تأتيه صفية بن حيي مخطب إحدى زوجاته فتتحدث إليه ساعة ولا يمنعها من ذلك
there is benefit, ease, and simplicity in conversing with one's family, and this contains good and benefit.
