The questioner : He says: One of the brothers had one day of Ramadan to make up, but when Ramadan ended, he forgot that he had one day remaining, so he fasted on the second day of the festival, and his intention was to fast six days of Shawwal. When it was the time of the afternoon prayer, he remembered that he had one obligatory day to make up, so he changed his intention from voluntary to obligatory. Then he completed the fast. The question is: Does this fast count as an obligatory day for him?

The Shaykh : It does not count as an obligatory day for him. And we spoke about this a little while ago. And we said that the obligatory fast must be intended before the dawn breaks. So based on this, we say to the brother:The questioner : It is obligatory for you now to make up the day that is upon you.
