The questioner : The honorable Shaykh says: A divorce occurred between my father and my mother for one of the reasons. My father said to my mother: “You are divorced if you leave the house.” She did not hear him, so she left. The divorce took place. This was the third divorce. What is your opinion, may Allah guide you and keep you steadfast?

The Shaykh : My opinion is that there is no divorce. First: the woman did not hear, so she did not commit disobedience. Second: the general rule for one who says such a statement is that he did not intend to divorce his wife, but rather intended to warn her against leaving. If it happens that she left intentionally, he owes an expiation for an oath.
