The shortcoming that occurs between the teacher and his students.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Also, there are rights between the teacher and his students. There are rights between the teacher and his students. It is obligatory for the students to treat the teacher well. How? They should stand, or be before him, in the position of a recipient who accepts what is given to him, like a thirsty person before the one who gives him drink, or a hungry person before the one who feeds him. In other words: the student should feel that he is in need of the teacher's instruction, so that he accepts it and benefits from it. But if he is before him while seeing that he is like him, or better than him, or that the teacher is deficient, then he will not benefit from him. It is not possible to benefit from the teacher except where you place yourself in the position of a thirsty person before the one who gives him drink. Otherwise, you will not benefit. And this is a tested matter. When we sit with people who speak in the most eloquent of speech, and we do not want to benefit from them, but only want to know what they have, we do not benefit from their knowledge. Even if we hold onto something during the delivery, it flies away immediately. But when we sit with people whom we want to learn from, we grasp what they have of knowledge, and it becomes firmly established in our souls. This is a right of the teacher over his students. Likewise, the reverse: the students have a right over the teacher. It is obligatory for him, that is, for the teacher, to take the closest paths to making the students understand. He should not come to them with complex phrases, or skip over the complex things in the book. No, he must convey the knowledge to the students by the closest means. And the means, praise be to Allah, are many. As for coming, for example, and delivering the lesson, and then woe to you if you ask him about something. Yes. This is a mistake. Some professors deliver the lesson, and then when a student raises his finger to inquire about an issue, he says: Sit down. "Oh professor, I did not understand!" He says: Sit down. If the student brings up an issue to him and he does not know it, and this happens often with some professors, who comes to the lesson without having prepared, and his information is little, he cannot teach except after preparation, and he does not prepare. Then when the student stands to ask him, and he has no knowledge, what does he do with the student? "Sit down, sit down, boy, there is no time left for discussion." This is a mistake. It is the right of the students over you that you treat them with gentleness, and that you take the closest paths to what? To making them understand. And also, discuss with them. Enliven them with discussion. Say: "So-and-so, stand up. So-and-so, stand up. So-and-so, what do you have?" So that you enliven the gathering. But some professors, you find him from the time he enters the lesson until it ends, and he is just reading, reading, reading, reading. This is a mistake. This is a deficiency. A deficiency. If the teacher wants the students to be with him in the highest of manners, and he does not behave with manners toward them, does he fall into the verse? Yes, he falls into the verse.
