The questioner : What is the ruling on being a guest at the home of a man whose wealth is mixed with forbidden and lawful items, given that he works in a shop that sells, for example, cigarettes and other forbidden items, as well as other lawful items such as books, notebooks, pens, and so on? What is the ruling on his work in that shop, considering that this man gives me some gifts? Should I accept them or refuse them? Please give us a ruling on this, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the righteous, and upon his family and all his Companions. The ruling on this man’s work in this shop is permissible, but on the condition that he stays away from forbidden transactions, such as riba (usury or interest), selling cigarettes, and anything else that Allah has forbidden him, so that his earnings are pure and lawful. As for his gifts to you and your staying with him as a guest, there is nothing wrong with that, and you have done nothing wrong in it. It is established that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted a gift from a Jewish woman when she gave him a sheep during the expedition to Khaybar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also accepted the invitation of a Jew who invited him in Madinah... [bread of barley and a sauce of foul smell]. He dealt with the Jews in buying and selling, to the extent that he (peace and blessings be upon him) died while his armor was pledged to a Jew in exchange for barley he had bought for his family. This indicates the permissibility of dealing with one whose wealth is mixed with forbidden items, because the Jews, as Allah the Exalted described them:
[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful سَمَّاعُونَ لِلْكَذِبِ أَكَّالُونَ لِلسُّحْتِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:42]
.

The questioner : This is a message from the listener A B, a Sudanese, in which he says in his message.
