The ruling on a salary from mixed earnings, some lawful and some forbidden
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner (E. A. M.) says: He works for one of the contractors as an accountant, but he says he has learned that the man’s wealth contains some mixed earnings from what is forbidden and what is lawful. So, does what he takes from him as a wage for the work he performs in the required manner contain some of that forbidden element, or not? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
If a man’s wealth is mixed, there is no blame on one who eats from his wealth at a wedding feast, or deals with him in any transaction; there is no blame in that. For it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he bought food from a Jew and pledged his armor for it. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has made lawful for us the food of the People of the Book, even though they engage in usury or interest. Their wealth is mixed, and yet Allah has made their food lawful for us, as He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said: [Al-Ma'idah: 5]. The People of the Book are the Jews and the Christians, and their food contains what it contains of usury or interest and other things.
As for if you know that this wealth is entirely forbidden, and that all his earnings are forbidden, then do not eat from his earnings, from his wealth, or from his food, if you know that all his earnings are forbidden. But if the wealth is mixed with him, having good earnings and bad earnings, then there is no blame in eating from his food. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
