The questioner : I read in some books that naming someone 'Abd al-Harith is a form of shirk (associating partners with Allah). What is your opinion on this, O honorable Shaykh, with an explanation of how it constitutes shirk, given that Allah is al-Harith?
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. As for what follows:
Naming someone 'Abd al-Harith involves attributing servitude to other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic). For al-Harith is a human being, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If a person attributes servitude to a created being, this is a type of shirk (associating partners with Allah), but it does not reach the level of major shirk. Therefore, if men are named with this name, it is obligatory to change it by adding it to the name of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), or by naming them with another name that is not compounded.
It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2834Sahih (Darussalam) And what is well-known among the common people, their saying: "The best of names are those that praise and worship" and their attributing this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not correct; that is, its attribution to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not authentic, for it did not come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this wording. Rather, what came was: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2834Sahih (Darussalam).
As for the questioner's statement in his question: "given that Allah is al-Harith", I do not know of a name for Allah (the Exalted) with this wording. Rather, He is described (Mighty and Majestic) as al-Zari' (the Planter), as in His saying (the Exalted):[Al-Waqi'ah 56:63-64].
