The student : Likewise, among these characteristics is that it is a call based on comprehensiveness. It is not limited to one aspect of Islam to the exclusion of another. It does not neglect the aspect of character in order to focus on the aspect of knowledge, nor does it neglect the aspect of knowledge in order to focus on the aspect of character. We know from the history of Islam that there were groups who specialized in matters of education and purification of the soul, namely the Sufis, who claimed that they wanted to refine souls, purify hearts, and remove the veils between them and their Lord. They specialized in this and did not practice anything else, nor did they care about anything else. The affairs of the Muslims, the governance of the nation, jihad in the path of Allah, the dangers befalling the nation, and the enemies coming against it—they did not participate in these. You know that among the early Sufis who were relatively moderate was Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, and his book is a staple for people from centuries ago. His book contained chapters on the rulings of Islam in many aspects, yet you do not find in it a chapter on jihad in the path of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He lived in an era when the Crusades began against the lands of Islam, yet you do not see in his history that he raised a cry for the liberation of Muslims from the Crusaders, or called for freeing these lands from their evils. Rather, he devoted his time, writings, and concern to the purification of souls. This purification of souls is a right and an obligation, but it is not permissible for it to distract us from other obligations. There must be a balance between the teachings of Islam and all its aspects. There should be no excess in the aspect of politics at the expense of other aspects, nor excess in the aspect of knowledge at the expense of the aspects of character, nor injustice to the aspect of character, nor exaggeration of one aspect at the expense of another. This call is a comprehensive, balanced call that gives every right its due and makes all aspects important and deserving of their share according to what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has assigned to them.
