The questioner : He saysThe questioner : I ask for clarification on the actual Sunnah and the Sunnah of omission, with examples?

The Shaykh : The actual Sunnah is what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did as an act of drawing near to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
And the Sunnah of omission is what the Messenger (peace be upon him) left undone =
-- We should hear now ... it will be recorded after the interference --
= And the Sunnah of omission is what the Messenger (peace be upon him) left undone in a place where some people think it is good and possible to do. On the assumption that if it were good and if it were prescribed, and it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left it, then the Sunnah in this case is omission, not action. There are many, many examples of this. The clearest is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to pray the five prayers, and before each of the five prayers there was an adhan and iqamah. But on the other hand, he used to pray other prayers in congregation, regardless of whether they were obligatory or confirmed Sunnahs, on which there is disagreement among scholars? And we are not discussing that now. The important point is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to pray other prayers in congregation besides the five obligatory prayers, and no adhan was called for them.
Among these, for example, is the prayer of the two festivals. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not call the adhan. Rather, it is established that the mu'adhdhin in his time (peace be upon him) would call out: "The prayer is gathered," in the prayer of the festival, in the prayer for rain, or in the eclipse prayer. So if a Muslim wants to draw closer to Allah, and it is considered good for him to call the adhan for the prayer of the two festivals, the adhan that is called for the five prayers, claiming that this contains good and the remembrance of Allah, tawhid, and testifying to the Messenger (peace be upon him) with prophethood and messengership; then he is drawing near with this adhan for the prayer of the two festivals. The response to him is that this is a bid'ah (religious innovation); because the Messenger (peace be upon him) left it and did not do it. If it were prescribed, he would have done it. Since he did not do it and left it, the Sunnah is to leave it, not to do it. This is an example of many, many examples, and a person can come up with numerous examples with a little reflection and thinking.
And the summary of that and the rule in that - as some of the Salaf said - is: "Every act of worship that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not worship with, do not worship with it." Because if it were an act of worship that the Messenger (peace be upon him) prescribed for the people; either by his saying, or his doing, or his approval; that he would see some people doing that act of worship and approve them for it. If a person comes wanting to draw near to Allah with something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed, as detailed above; then this drawing near is an innovation in the religion. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the famous hadith:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور ؛ فإنَّ كل محدثة بدعة ، وكل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
