Explanation of the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud that is mawquf (stopping at a Companion): (The worst of the morals of a believer is foul speech)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Rather, it is from the saying of Ibn Mas'ud himself. What did he say? "The worst of the morals of a believer is foul speech", meaning that the worst of morals if a believer adopts it is foul speech. This type of report is called a mawquf hadith in the terminology of hadith scholars, and its counterpart is a marfu' hadith. If we see in a book that a report is marfu', that is an abbreviation for their saying, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said." Conversely, if we see in a book that a report is mawquf, that is an abbreviation for saying, "So-and-so, the noble Companion, said." Likewise, if it is said, "It is narrated as marfu'," that is an abbreviation for "from the Messenger of Allah." Likewise, if it is said, "It is narrated as mawquf," that is an abbreviation for "from the saying of some of the Companions," and so on.
