The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: Your Eminence.

The Shaykh : When does a report stopping at a Companion have the ruling of being traced to the Prophet?

The Shaykh : When a hadith is reported as stopping at a Companion, it sometimes has the ruling of being traced to the Prophet and sometimes it does not. What can be definitively stated is: a hadith stopping at a Companion, once the chain of narration to him is established, is considered traced to the Prophet in one specific case, with a condition that must be mentioned. This case is when the report concerns matters of the unseen (ghayb) that the human mind cannot ordinarily speak about. If the hadith stopping at a Companion discusses a matter of the unseen, it has the ruling of being traced to the Prophet, because, as scholars say in many such instances: "It is not said based on mere opinion."
What is the condition? That this hadith stopping at a Companion should not be possible to be from the Isra'iliyyat (narrations from the People of the Book). If it is possible that it is from the Isra'iliyyat, it is not permissible at that time to claim that it has the ruling of being traced to the Prophet because of its connection to the unseen, because the Isra'iliyyat also discuss matters of the unseen.
