Examples of taxes that the state collects.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : If you could give us examples, O Shaykh, of the taxes that it is permissible for the state to collect.

The Shaykh : I do not think I can right now, but I think, I mean, I think theoretically.

The questioner : Car customs and the like.

The Shaykh : Okay, take traffic violations, for example. Are these comparable to customs? No, they are not the same. That is why I am saying that we cannot generalize the prohibition of taxes.

The questioner : O Shaykh, I brought a device, and this device has a preferential customs duty if it is brought into the country. So I hid it, or I said I have nothing, and so on, and they let me pass.

The Shaykh : My brother, I have researched this issue repeatedly and over and over, so I do not want to expand on this now.

The questioner : But just an answer.

The Shaykh : But my point is that it is not permissible for us to exploit the fact that all taxes are forbidden to remove this injustice from ourselves by committing another injustice against ourselves.

The questioner : Do not expand on it.

The Shaykh : That is the point. As for entering into a precise classification of taxes, saying that this type is permissible and this one is not, that, by Allah, requires a study by an official who has a precise knowledge of the types of taxes imposed on the people. You took customs, for example; these are known to be not permissible in Islam. But a tax aimed at punishing those who violate the system, the compliance with which is in the interest of the entire community, that is not like many taxes that are injustice itself. I wanted to point to this detail, which involves extreme precision, and we cannot know it with this level of detail, only so that a Muslim does not fall into committing a forbidden act in the name of removing harm from himself, which is taxes.
