A Hadith Error Committed by al-Sabuni in His Tafsir

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The hadith you asked our brother Ali about earlier, he attributes it with this wording, saying, "And we have narrated." Some people phrase it this way, and this "wa" (and) serves a purpose: "And we have narrated in the hadith." The correct form is "ruwwina" (we were narrated to us): "And we have narrated in the hadith" from various routes "in the beginning of" the important thing is what Ibn Kathir says: "In the beginning of the commentary on the Book of Faith from Sahih al-Bukhari." He says in the tafsir that the hadith was extracted there, and in the commentary, in the beginning of the commentary on the Book of Faith from Sahih al-Bukhari. These are the ones who abridged Ibn Kathir's tafsir, and for them, the hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari.
The student : Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.

The Shaykh : This is the calamity of the age that we are constantly talking about: that, O people, do not rush, do not write about things that are not your specialty. This is Ibn Kathir's phrase in the tafsir. Here, al-Sabuni, may Allah guide him, mentioned the hadith there above: "And we have narrated in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah said." That is fine.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Below it: "Extracted by al-Bukhari in the Book of Faith."
The student : ... .

The Shaykh : Our late companion also fell into the same error, but this is in the main text. He does not have the deceitfulness that that other one has. That other one takes the takhrij from above and puts it below to mislead people into thinking that this is from his work, from his takhrij, from his knowledge. This one leaves it as he found it, but he did not notice that this is Ibn Kathir mentioning it in the commentary on the Book of Faith, so he wrote here: "And in Sahih al-Bukhari, so-and-so." I was truly surprised, because I remember this hadith; I know its takhrij and its weakness. I came here now, and when I saw it attributed to al-Bukhari, I went back to the original. And the original is in the commentary on al-Bukhari, where it is also mentioned in the work called al-Ba'ith al-Hathith. It does not resemble this meaning. What does it say? "La ilaha illa Allah." I said, "And it has been narrated in the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said," and so on. Then, at the end of the hadith, he said, "And we have mentioned the hadith with its chain and wording in the commentary on al-Bukhari."

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : ... This is in al-Ba'ith, in the abridged tafsir. And regarding this statement, completely, these people did not notice. Look now, where is the precision in the matter? This error happens to a person; we do not deny that, but it does not happen to a person saturated with hadith. That is, during the abridgment, he skips the word "commentary," and it becomes "Sahih al-Bukhari." But when his profession is "Sahih al-Bukhari," and the hadith is weak, how can it be "Sahih al-Bukhari"? He should notice. If his eyes deceived him and his pen rushed ahead, leaving out the word "commentary," when he goes back to correct it... and in "Sahih al-Bukhari," how did this end up in "Sahih al-Bukhari"? I know that this is a weak hadith, and there was discussion about its weakness. And the discussion was not about Muslim, or Muslim, but it is not present in "Sahih al-Bukhari." This is when one is... saturated with the science of hadith. Then, when someone who has not studied hadith, or who has only a small part of it, comes to abridge a book like Ibn Kathir's tafsir, which has hadiths of all kinds, he says, "I have abridged it, and... except for the authentic hadiths." I wish he would say, "I abridged it, but..." The problems are many. May the happy Muslim take lessons and admonition from them, and Allah is the Helper in criticizing texts... And the intention in presenting these studies is not to criticize the professor's book specifically, because the book is like any book placed by a professor in his subject. If he did not leave his position, his book would follow him and become forgotten and neglected.
The student: Hehehe.
