Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: ((And the date palms, with their tall, rising trunks, bearing clustered date flowers)).

The Shaykh :
(9) And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest (10) And lofty palm trees having fruit arranged in layers - (11) As provision for the servants
[Qaf 50:9-11]
Gardens: meaning large, numerous trees intertwined with one another, providing shade to whoever is inside them. And the grain of the harvest: meaning the crops that are harvested and people benefit from them. This is the rain by which Allah creates the trees and brings forth the crops. Then He said:
And the date palms, with their tall, rising trunks
The date palms are among the gardens, but He specified them to honor them and exalt them, although the date palms are indeed among the gardens, meaning the garden is an orchard with many trees. Allah the Exalted said:
And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops.
[Al-Kahf 18:32]

The date palms are tall and high. Therefore, you will not find a tree that rises as high as the date palm, with its branch high up and its root in the ground; its root is firm and its branch is in the sky. You will not find a tree more beneficial than the date palm; it is all benefit. Its fibers and leaves are fuel, its fiber is used for ropes and baskets, and its fruit is food. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has placed in it a wonderful property for the woman in labor: if she eats a lot of fresh dates, she will benefit. The evidence for this is that Allah made a date palm easy for Maryam
(23) And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten." (24) But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.
[Maryam 19:23-24]
meaning a flowing stream
(25) And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. (26) So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.'
[Maryam 19:25-26]
If you reflect on the verse, you will find wonders in it. A woman in labor is usually afflicted with fatigue, exhaustion, and weakness. Allah says to her:
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree
[Maryam 19:25]
By the trunk. The custom is that when something is shaken by its trunk, it does not move; if it is shaken from the top, it moves, but the trunk does not move. Here she shook it by the trunk because she could not climb up.
it will drop upon you ripe
[Maryam 19:25]
She shakes it, and only fresh dates fall; dried dates do not fall. Only fresh dates fall because they are the appropriate ones. Then He says:
Fresh dates, ripe and ready
Meaning they do not tear when they fall to the ground. The custom is that if fresh dates fall from a date palm, even if it is short, what happens? They tear and get crushed. But they fall to the ground as if they were picked by hand.
So the date palm is all blessing, and for this reason, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, singles it out in many verses among the other trees.
(10) And lofty palm trees having fruit arranged in layers - (11) As provision for the servants, and We have given life thereby to a dead land. Thus is the resurrection.
[Qaf 50:10-11]
Clustered: arranged in its cluster. This is the meaning of His saying in another verse: "date flowers, soft and ripe." "Soft and ripe" means: clustered. It does not mean, as the common people understand, that it digests. Some people say "soft and ripe" means it digests food, but that is not the case. It is true that sweetness, in itself, aids digestion, but we do not interpret the verse with something it does not indicate. So "soft and ripe" in the verse means clustered. The Qur'an interprets some of it with some of it.
