The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “The one who performs cupping and the one who is cupped have broken their fast.” What is the rationale for the one who performs cupping breaking his fast? And those who do not consider cupping to break the fast cite evidence from a hadith in al-Bukhari that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was cupped while fasting. How is this answered?

The questioner : Regarding the topic of cupping mentioned by the Shaykh, the questioner says: The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The one who performs cupping and the one who is cupped break their fast أفطر الحاجم والمحجوم
. If we say that the rationale for the one who is cupped breaking his fast is that it may be difficult for him due to the heavy flow of blood, what is the rationale for the one who performs cupping breaking his fast? Another says: It is known to you that there are those who say that cupping is not among the things that break the fast, and they cite evidence from a hadith in *al-Bukhari* from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had cupping done when he was fasting احتجم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو صائم
Sunan Ibn Majah 1682Sahih (Darussalam)
. And they answer those who cited this hadith by stating its text is:
The Prophet (ﷺ) got married while he was in the state of Ihram. احتجم الرسول صلي الله عليه وسلم وهو محرم
Sahih al-Bukhari 5114
. What is the answer?

The Shaykh : As for the first part of the question, which is: if we say that the one who is cupped breaks his fast due to the exit of a large amount of blood and the weakening of the body, what is the cause for the one who performs cupping breaking his fast? The answer is: According to this, it is from one of two perspectives. Some scholars said that the breaking of the fast by the one who performs cupping is a devotional matter (ta'abbudi) for which we do not know the wisdom, so we take the wording even if we do not know the wisdom. This is the well-known position of the Hanbali school. Others said that the cause is that the cupper sucks the cup with strong suction, and if he sucks it with strong suction, the blood flows into his mouth and then into his stomach, thereby breaking his fast. And if we assume that he preserved himself and it did not flow down, that is rare, and the rare case has no ruling. This is the choice of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. Based on this, he said: If the cupper performs cupping without sucking the cup, but by another means, he does not break his fast. Therefore, the one who performs phlebotomy does not break his fast, nor does ... because they did not suck the cup, meaning there is no cup for them to suck. As for the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was cupped while fasting, Imam Ahmad said that this narration was contradicted by the companions of Abdullah ibn Abbas who narrated the hadith. They narrated it as:
He was cupped while in the state of ihram. احتجم وهو محرم
. And his statement:
While fasting. وهو صائم
would be an anomalous narration.
