The Shaykh : Every Muslim knows that Islam is built upon two foundations, with no third: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This is a fact in which no two people differ, as they used to say in old times, "No two camels butt heads over this." So, if this is a fact that every Muslim knows, why did Muslims differ in the past and why do they still differ today? They all say, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." A Muslim’s faith is not complete without these two testimonies: the good word, "There is no god but Allah," and the testimony to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding his prophethood and messengership. But is it sufficient for a Muslim to be saved in this world before the Hereafter to merely say this good word and the second testimony with his tongue, without understanding what "There is no god but Allah" means or what its implications are? He also does not know the implications of saying, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." We must pause at this point. I repeat this warning: all Muslims say, "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." It is obligatory that no one refuses this; if he does, he has no connection to Islam. If that is the case, what is the secret, what is the reason for the differences that occurred in the past and continue to occur today? Allah the Exalted informed us of this in a general manner, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) detailed it in some of his hadiths. He said:
(118) And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ. (119) Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together." ولو شاء ربك لجعل الناس أمة واحدة ولا يزالون مختلفين إلا من رحم ربك
[Hud 11:118-119]
. The news of Allah cannot be delayed, and who is more truthful in speech than Allah?
but they will not cease to differ. (119) Except whom your Lord has given mercy ولا يزالون مختلفين إلا من رحم ربك
[Hud 11:118-119]
. This is news from Allah in His Book, stated in general terms.
but they will not cease to differ. (119) Except whom your Lord has given mercy ولا يزالون مختلفين إلا من رحم ربك
[Hud 11:118-119]
. The detail of this noble verse is in the hadith that you have surely heard or read many, many times, namely His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
