What is the correct definition of al-Tawlah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Another question, O Shaykh. Regarding al-Tawlah,The Shaykh : Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is something they make to make a woman beloved to her husband." And he said,The Shaykh : Ibn Baz (may Allah reward him with good) said: "These are the amulets that are hung on small children." So what is the precise definition of al-Tawlah, may Allah honor you?

The Shaykh : It is writing intended to achieve something by an unlawful method. Among these methods are the amulets (hujub) that are hung around the neck, under the armpit, on the chest, or elsewhere. However, there are two opinions among scholars, both past and present. The matter differs depending on whether this amulet, which is al-Tawlah, is limited to writing a verse of incantation from a Qur'anic verse or an incantation from a Prophetic hadith. Some scholars permit it, while others do not, because it was not the practice of the Salaf. This falls entirely within the scope of the previous discussion.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : As for when the writing is not from a Qur'anic verse or a Prophetic hadith, there is consensus that it is not permissible to hang it.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : The disagreement is only when the writing is lawful. Is it permissible to hang it? Some say yes, and some say no. Personally, I lean toward the latter.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : That is, it is not permissible to hang any of these amulets, even if they are limited solely to a verse from the Noble Qur'an or an incantation from the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Undoubtedly, the intentions differ. If the intention is, for example, protection from the evil eye, it is a general incantation. If the intention is to achieve affection between spouses, it is specifically termed al-Tawlah.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, exactly.

The questioner : Based on that, O Shaykh, the definition given by the two eminent scholars is that it is an amulet, meaning it is made for a woman to make her beloved to her husband?

The Shaykh : Yes, exactly.

The questioner : In the same way...

The Shaykh : Yes, exactly.
